A mother and daughter create a new life after tragedy.
When Morgan learned she was expecting their daughter Clara, Chris, she felt compelled to marry him. Jonah, the caring best friend of Chris who was dating Jenny's sister, was someone she got along with a lot better in private. She now feels hollow from being a stay-at-home parent, but she is still grateful for what she has. Years after their breakup, Jonah and Jenny had a one-night fling, during which Jenny became pregnant with their son Elijah. Jonah has returned to town and is now dating Jenny.and serving as Clara's teacher at the neighborhood high school. Although her father disapproves, Clara develops a crush on Miller and aspires to be an actress. Miller intends to attend film school. Miller already has a resentful girlfriend who texts him from college, which doesn't help. But when Chris and Jenny are murdered in an accident, long-buried secrets are revealed, and Morgan is forced to reconsider the path she took when early parenthood forced her to. As a result, Clara and Morgan's home life is drastically altered. Clara moves forward, feeling deceived by the grownups in her life.
While Jonah and Morgan's friendship develops in the wake of the tragedy, Morgan navigates her teenage years without her father and her aunt, acting both responsible and defiant. The plot, which is heavily filled with drama, gives the mother and daughter plenty of time to process their emotions and choose what to do next.
The connections ebb and flow gracefully, the talks are insightful, and the emotions are intense.
