Siddhartha By Hermann Hesse |
At first I found it difficult to understand the book. It was translated from German to English and I think some of the finesse has been lost. As I got used to the novel's wording, I really began to love its beautiful ideas. Siddhartha starts off a bit arrogant and annoying which makes him very unapproachable but on his journey he discovers his imperfections and I really liked his character. His journey begins as a Brahmin, but he quickly decides to leave his family to become a Samana
who is a traveling ascetic.
Here you will learn three great skills. Think, wait and be quick. Then he meets Buddha, where he learns that nothing can be taught without learning it oneself. Not until he meets a beautiful woman named Kamala. that I was really interested in his journey. From her he learns the art of loving.
But what makes it so interesting is that she only dates one rich man, so he starts working as a merchant. During this time, Siddhartha falls into the trap of greed and materialism. It's refreshing to see that a man who's spent his whole life finding the path to happiness can also get busy with simple things like money. Having worked in the fashion industry, this chapter really spoke to me the most.
Being consumed by meaningless things can happen to anyone.
